Pfarrkirche Asperhofen
The parish church of Asperhofen stands on a raised platform in the southern part of the market town in Lower Austria. It belongs to the Diocese of St Pölten and is dedicated to Saint Agatha of Catania. The church has been under Denkmalschutz since the listing was created. The building began as a late-Gothic hall church in the 15th century. After damage in 1683 it gained a sacristy and a chapel, and the nave was raised in 1890. Further additions in 1910 and a full restoration in 1973–74 gave the interior its present unity. The painter Maria Sturm decorated the ceiling with scenes of the Apocalypse and the Holy Trinity in 1950. Inside, the west gallery rests on cast-iron pillars with a neo-Gothic front from 1992. The high altar, a late-baroque retable from the mid-18th century, carries a painting of Saint Agatha’s martyrdom attributed to Johann Adam Mölk. A baroque statue of the Immaculate Conception by Leopold Heinz stands beside the nave. The organ by Werner Walcker-Mayer dates from 1992, and a small bell from 1750 and a larger one from 1851 complete the furnishings.
