Archäologischer Fundplatz bei Luchem

An archaeological site near Luchem lies beside the A4 motorway between Düren and Eschweiler. It covers 45 000 square metres of gently sloping land once crossed by a Roman road. Excavations in 2011 uncovered traces of a settlement, a cemetery and a complete horse skeleton.

The site produced about 750 finds dating from the first to the third centuries AD. Among them were five timber houses, wells, a road and a cemetery with 220 graves. Experts from the Rhineland Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments directed the dig for the state road authority.

Visitors walk across the open field where the remains were found. A low fence marks the limits of the excavation area. Interpretive panels explain the layout of the Roman village and the road that once linked Mariaweiler with Eschweiler.
