Bywell Castle

Bywell Castle stands on a rise above the River Tyne in the quiet village of Bywell, four miles east of Corbridge in Northumberland. Built in 1430 by the Neville family, it was never finished, yet its three-storey gatehouse and part of the curtain wall still rise above the landscape. The castle is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, recognised for its historical importance. King Henry VI stayed here after the Battle of Hexham in 1464, seeking safety in its unfinished walls. Today it remains the seat of the Viscounts Allendale, though the castle is privately owned and not usually open to visitors. The castle’s name is linked to a tragic event on the River Thames in 1878. A ship named Bywell Castle collided with the SS Princess Alice, sinking it within minutes and causing a loss of between 590 and 640 lives. The disaster remains one of the worst maritime accidents on the Thames. Despite this sombre connection, the castle itself tells a story of unfinished ambition and medieval power. Its ruins and later additions show how the site has been shaped across centuries. Visitors to Bywell can walk past the castle’s impressive gatehouse and curtain wall, imagining the Neville family’s grand plans. The later house built into the wall adds another layer of history to the site. The village of Bywell itself is small and peaceful, with the River Tyne flowing nearby. The castle’s presence dominates the skyline, a reminder of Northumberland’s medieval past. Though not open to the public, its exterior offers a glimpse into a story of power, refuge, and tragedy.
