Latimer Road tube station

Latimer Road is an Underground station in North Kensington, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It stands on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines between Wood Lane and Ladbroke Grove. The station sits in London fare zone two. The road itself lies about five hundred metres north of the station, separated by the Westway Flyover. Before the flyover was built, Latimer Road once ran closer to the station. The southern end of the road was cut off and renamed Freston Road after the flyover’s construction. The station opened in December 1868 where two railway lines once met. One line ran between Westbourne Park and Hammersmith, the other between Willesden Junction and Kensington Olympia. Services to Kensington Olympia ended in 1940 and the track between Latimer Road and Uxbridge Road was removed. Remains of the old track can still be seen from the eastbound platform. In 2010 work began to rebuild both platforms for new seven-car trains. The station closed for fourteen weeks in early 2011 while the work took place. Today the ticket hall sits beneath the tracks in a brick arch. Passengers reach the platforms by stairs under simple timber canopies. The station has two ticket machines, help points, payphones and waiting rooms. Large screens show live service updates. From the Paddington-bound platform there is a clear view of Grenfellow Tower behind the station. Automated announcements ask passengers not to photograph the damaged building. London Bus routes 295 and 316 stop nearby.
