Prösels Castle

Schloss Prösels is a Gothic castle standing on a high plain below the Schlern mountain in South Tyrol. It lies within the commune of Völs am Schlern, near the Italian town of Bolzano. The castle first appears in records from 1279, though its builders, the lords of Völs, may have begun work around 1200. Parts of the original fortress survive, including a central palace with a Romanesque archway. The castle later became known as Castel Colonna after the Völs family added the Colonna name. Leonhard of Völs expanded the castle in the late 15th century, turning it into the Gothic structure seen today. The castle’s history reflects both power and tragedy. Leonhard of Völs, a wealthy administrator of salt mines, became governor of Tyrol in 1498 with the support of Emperor Maximilian I. During the Peasants’ War of 1525, rebellious farmers briefly seized the castle and destroyed its records. Leonhard also ordered the execution of nine women accused of witchcraft, events that inspired local legends of the Schlern witches. After the Völs family died out in 1810, the castle fell into ruin until restoration began in 1981. Visitors today find a castle with guided tours, cultural events, and permanent displays. The interior features a collection of weapons and suits of armour, while the Batzenhäusl restaurant collection of paintings highlights the oldest restaurant in Bolzano. Modern art is also on display, adding to the castle’s cultural role. The surrounding area offers views of the Schlern mountain and the peaceful high plain. Events such as concerts and exhibitions take place during summer and Christmas. The restored castle now stands as a reminder of its layered past.
