Medway megaliths

The Medway Megaliths form a group of Early Neolithic chambered long barrows and other megalithic monuments in the lower valley of the River Medway in Kent. Built between the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE from local sarsen stone and soil, they are the only known prehistoric megalithic group in eastern England. Six chambered tombs stand on either side of the river, including Coldrum Stones and Kit’s Coty House. Archaeologists believe these sites reflect the spread of Neolithic farming and changing burial practices. Some long barrows were used as tombs for selected individuals while others served as places for religious rituals. A longhouse and causewayed enclosure nearby add to the prehistoric landscape. These monuments mark a turning point in British prehistory when hunter-gatherer groups gave way to settled farming communities. The tombs show regional architectural styles, with earthen long barrows typical of south-east Britain where stone was scarce. Caroline Malone has argued that such tombs acted as territorial markers and symbols of ancestral connection. Ronald Hutton describes them as ‘tomb-shrines’ because they combined burial and ritual functions. Damage in the late 13th century and later antiquarian interest have left the stones in a fragile state. Yet their presence shows how Neolithic people organised land and memory across the Medway valley. Visitors find low grassy mounds and scattered sarsen slabs that once formed chambers and passages. Coldrum Stones and Kit’s Coty House stand on gentle slopes with wide views over farmland and woodland. The Coffin Stone and White Horse Stone lie nearby, their broken forms hinting at vanished tombs. Oak, ash and hazel still grow around the sites, echoing the ancient woodland that once covered the area. Local folklore links the stones to later sacred uses, adding layers of meaning for walkers and visitors today.
