Supertram

The South Yorkshire Supertram is a light rail network linking Sheffield and Rotherham. It runs on a mix of purpose-built tracks and former heavy rail alignments. The system is owned by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and has four colour-coded routes: Blue, Purple, Yellow and Tram-Train (Black). Stations total 51 and connect with buses, mainline trains and seven park-and-ride sites. The network opened in stages during 1994 and 1995 after construction began in 1991. The Supertram was planned in the 1980s to replace the old Sheffield tram system closed in 1960. Early ridership was low because of complex ticketing and limited coverage. In 1997 the operation was privatised to Stagecoach, which simplified fares and boosted use. By 2011/12 annual journeys reached 15 million, up from 7.8 million in 1996/97. A tram-train service to Rotherham started in 2018, using new Class 399 electric units that share tracks with Network Rail. Visitors find modern trams running every few minutes along well-marked routes. The tram-train line leaves the city centre, crosses Tinsley’s heavy rail junction and reaches Rotherham Central, where platforms serve both tram and train. Beyond Rotherham Central the line continues to Parkgate shopping centre on a single-track spur. Sheltered stops with seating and real-time displays stand beside bus interchanges and park-and-ride car parks.
