Church of Holy Trinity and St George, Kendal

The Church of Holy Trinity and St George stands in New Road, Kendal, Cumbria. It is an active Roman Catholic parish church in the diocese of Lancaster. The building is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed structure. The church was founded by parish priest Thomas Wilkinson and designed by local architect George Webster. Architectural historians recognise it as the best of the three churches Webster designed in Kendal. The church replaced an earlier chapel on the same site from 1793. Construction began in 1835 and the church was consecrated in 1837. It has been flooded several times, leading to the floor being raised in 1908. The original organ was damaged by floods and later replaced by a harmonium and then a two-manual organ. In 2000 an electronic organ was installed, along with an electronic bell system and a new vestibule. The church is built in Early English style from limestone with a slate roof. The nave has six bays without aisles, a west porch and a chancel. The west front features a pointed doorway, three stepped lancet windows and a statue of Saint George and the Dragon. Inside, a west gallery is carried on a four-bay arcade with slender columns. The chancel has two niches with statues by Thomas Duckett and a cast-iron rail with trefoil heads. The stained glass includes works by Hardman & Co. and H. Barnett.
