Burg Denzlingen
The Burg Denzlingen, also called Burg Maurach, was a suspected spur castle near Denzlingen in the Emmendingen district. It stood on the eastern spur of the Mauracher Berg at about 250 metres above sea level. The site is now occupied by the Severins chapel. Experts once thought the castle dated from the 12th century, but recent work suggests it is more likely to have been an Ottonian fortification. The European Castle Institute proposes that the stronghold stretched roughly 300 metres from east to west. Archaeologists have found traces of ditches that once defended the hilltop. These earthworks were once taken as proof of a high-medieval castle. The same institute now argues that the remains point instead to an earlier Ottonian defensive work. The chapel itself preserves no visible traces of the fortress, though its position marks the spot. Written records from the period do not mention the castle by name. Visitors to the Mauracher Berg can walk to the Severins chapel and stand on the spur where the fortification once stood. The view across the surrounding countryside takes in the Emmendingen basin and the Black Forest in the distance. The chapel is a quiet place, its small nave open to the public. A short path leads from the village up the gentle slope to the hilltop. The site offers a peaceful moment to imagine the vanished stronghold and the landscape it once commanded.
