Stockerau airfield

The Flugplatz Stockerau lies on the edge of Stockerau in Lower Austria, a flat stretch of former military land turned into a working airfield. In 1978 the local flying club FSV2000 began converting part of the old Senning training ground, and today the site runs a busy 800-metre asphalt runway with hangars, workshops, classrooms and a fuel point. A modern flight school trains pilots in gliders, propeller planes and helicopters, while a small fleet of DV20 Katana, Cessna 172 and Piper PA-28 Archer aircraft stands ready for hire. Television viewers met the airfield through the ORF series Die Überflieger, filmed there in 2008 and broadcast on Friday nights that summer. The club also keeps a hire car for pilots wanting to reach Stockerau’s town centre or nearby hotels, and taxis arrive within twenty minutes when the hire car is booked. Because of its proximity to Vienna the airfield is a popular starting point for sightseeing flights over the city and the foothills of the Alps. Visitors find a working airfield rather than a museum, with pilots and engineers moving between hangars and classrooms. A small canteen serves meals and coffee, while the adjacent fuel station supplies both mogas and avgas. The wide runway and open surroundings make it easy to watch take-offs and landings, and the flat terrain allows long straight taxiways for aircraft and vehicles alike.
