Burg Dachswangen
Burg Dachswangen lies in the flat land near Umkirch in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. Built as a lowland castle, it once belonged to the Lords of Dachswangen. The first written record comes from 1122 in the Rotulus Sanpetrinus. The Lords of Blumegg held the castle until 1577, when Gaudenz von Blumegg died without an heir. After his death the estate passed to St. Blasien Abbey, which still held fishing rights to 300 trout in Schluchsee. By the 18th century the building had become a mill, and later it fell into ruin. Excavations in 1977 uncovered traces of the original medieval walls. Visitors today see a quiet spot where the past remains visible in the old stonework. The site sits on the eastern edge of the Kaiserstuhl hills, surrounded by farmland and vineyards.
