Holy Trinity Old Church, Bothenhampton

Holy Trinity Old Church stands in the quiet village of Bothenhampton in Dorset. Built in the 13th or 14th century, it is one of the oldest buildings in the area. The church was once the main parish church but now only the chancel and a 15th-century tower remain from its medieval past. In the 1880s the nave was removed and a new church was built nearby. The old building then served as a mortuary chapel until 1971. The church is a Grade I listed building, recognised for its historical importance. Its stone structure includes a three-bay chancel with a simple stone slab roof and a small tower to the south. The tower has short buttresses and a doorway with a plank door. Inside, an early Georgian reredos and a 13th-century font can be seen, though the font’s base and stem were added in the 20th century. Visitors find a peaceful, uncluttered space with only the chancel and tower remaining. The plain stone walls and small windows give a sense of its long history. The surrounding village of Bothenhampton adds to the quiet atmosphere. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, ensuring its survival for future generations.
