Palais Bourgoing

The Palais Bourgoing stands in Vienna’s third district, Landstraße, on Metternichgasse. Built in 1890 for Baron Othon de Bourgoing, it was designed by French architects Amand Louis Bauqué and Albert Emilio Pio. The same team later worked on Łańcut Castle’s interiors. A year after its completion, the baron commissioned another palace nearby, today known as the Palais Rothschild. The construction was carried out by the firm Heinrich and Franz Glaser. The palace is a fine example of late historicist architecture with a banded façade. Neo-Empire decorative elements appear below the top-floor windows and in the window lintels under triangular gables. Its asymmetrical corner projections frame an entrance with latticework in a semicircular arch. Above the entrance, three consoles with rich Empire detailing support a balcony with wrought iron railings. Since 1968, the building has housed the Vienna Film Academy. Visitors can admire the grand entrance and the intricate decorative elements on the façade. The surrounding Metternichgasse adds to the area’s refined atmosphere. The palace remains a notable landmark in Vienna’s architectural landscape.
