Haller Mauern

The Haller Mauern is a small mountain chain in the Northern Limestone Alps of the Steiermark. Its highest point is the Großer Pyhrgas at 2,244 metres. The range forms the western buttress of the main ridge. The peaks are made of limestone and rise sharply above the surrounding valleys. The area lies between the Gesäuse and the Ennstaler Alps.
The Großer Pyhrgas is the most accessible of the summits. The normal route to the top requires sure-footedness but no technical climbing. From the summit there are fine views over the Alps and the valleys below. The Haller Mauern is less crowded than the nearby Gesäuse. Walkers often combine a climb here with visits to the Gesäuse National Park.
On the lower slopes there are alpine meadows and forests of spruce and larch. The paths are marked and well maintained. The Haller Mauern is recognised for its quiet trails and dramatic rock faces. The contrast between the rugged peaks and the green valleys is striking. The range is popular with both day walkers and longer trekkers.
