Alexander Nevsky Memorial Church

The Alexander-Newski Memorial Church stands in Potsdam near the Kapellenberg, on the edge of the Alexandrowka settlement. Built between 1826 and 1829, it is the oldest Russian Orthodox church in Germany. The church was designed by Vasily Stasov and reflects early Byzantine Revival architecture. It was intended for Russian residents of Alexandrowka, which now forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin’. Consecrated in 1829, the building remains an active place of worship.
The church’s significance lies in its architectural innovation and historical role. It is one of the earliest examples in Germany of Byzantine Revival style, blending Russian Revival influences. Its construction followed a period when Russian soldiers and their families settled in the area after the Napoleonic Wars. The building’s design includes five onion domes, a feature typical of Russian Orthodox churches. Its preservation reflects the cultural ties between Russia and Prussia in the 19th century.
Inside, visitors find a simple but striking interior with an iconostasis and religious icons. The church’s exterior is dominated by its tall, slender bell tower and the five gilded domes. The surrounding Alexandrowka settlement retains its original Russian character, with wooden houses arranged in a grid. The church overlooks a quiet parkland area near the Kapellenberg. Its setting combines historical architecture with the peaceful landscape of Potsdam’s heritage sites.
