St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh

St Cuthbert’s Church stands in central Edinburgh beside Princes Street Gardens and Lothian Road. Founded perhaps in the 7th century, it was first recorded in 1128 when David I granted the parish to Holyrood Abbey. The present building, completed in 1894, was designed by Hippolyte Blanc in Baroque and Renaissance styles. The churchyard borders the gardens and the road, enclosing a site that has been sacred for centuries. Between the 14th and 17th centuries the church was damaged or destroyed at least four times, often during sieges of the nearby castle. After the Scottish Reformation in 1560 it became known as the West Kirk. The church is notable for its furnishings and memorials. Stained glass windows were created by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Douglas Strachan and Ballantyne & Gardiner. Mural paintings by Gerald Moira and John Duncan cover the walls, while John Flaxman and George Frampton designed memorials. A ring of ten bells by Taylor of Loughborough hangs in the tower. Seven ministers have served as Moderator of the General Assembly, including Robert Pont who held the role six times in the late 16th century. The church also runs ministries among homeless people and Edinburgh’s business community. Inside, visitors find a spacious nave with richly decorated fittings and a tall steeple retained from the earlier Georgian church. The stained glass throws coloured light across the pews, and the murals depict biblical scenes and local history. The churchyard contains ancient gravestones and a leaden urn found in 1773 which once held an embalmed heart. From the steps the view looks down to Princes Street Gardens and across to the castle. The building remains a quiet refuge in the heart of the city.
