Holy Trinity Church

The parish church of the Holy Trinity stands high on the wooded slopes of the Sonntagsberg near Frauenstein in Carinthia, 1 180 metres above sea level. A small wooden chapel once marked the spot where a farmer and later the local priest claimed to have seen a vision of the Trinity. In 1724 the church was first mentioned, and in 1785 it became the parish church for the area. The building is a rare Austrian example of a log church, with a stone choir and sacristy added in 1785. The nave, probably older, is a single log construction under a flat barrel vault. A wooden bell tower was added in 1865, and the west porch has been renewed. Inside, a wooden gallery on four posts occupies the western half of the nave, while the eastern half was boarded up around 1860. The high altar, made about 1720, carries a painted Trinity flanked by carved foliage. A neobaroque side altar was added in 1905 by Mathias Slama. The pulpit from around 1700 shows painted apostles between carved figures of the Evangelists. Four carved saints in the choir are attributed to Johann Pacher. A fasten cloth from about 1800 depicts the Crucifixion surrounded by Passion scenes.
