Schloss Horn
Schloss Horn stands on a high spur of land where the Lein and Federbach rivers meet, in the Horn district of Göggingen. The present building replaced medieval ruins in 1760, when Rupert Franz Xaver and Franz Christoph Benedict von Schwarzach commissioned a new residence influenced by Balthasar Neumann’s style. The rectangular two-storey structure has nine windows on one side and five on the other, topped by a mansard roof with dormers and an entrance balcony bearing their combined coat of arms. Inside, a grand enfilade runs the full length of the main floor, giving a clear sense of order and symmetry. Only fragments remain of the old castle: part of the gatehouse with its round tower and sections of the surrounding walls. The estate passed through several noble families after being held by the lords of Ahelfingen in the 14th century. By the 18th century it belonged to the Schwarzach brothers, who improved the farm buildings and laid out a formal garden before building the new palace. After changing hands among the counts of Beroldingen for over a century and a half, it was sold in 1954 and remains in private ownership today. The Catholic chapel of Our Lady of the Presentation, with its rococo fittings, still serves the local community. Protected as a cultural monument, the site offers a quiet record of Württemberg’s aristocratic past. Visitors walk past the medieval remnants into a courtyard framed by the gatehouse tower. The chapel’s delicate stucco and gilded altarpiece contrast with the severe lines of the palace exterior. Inside the main building, the enfilade of white-and-grey rooms opens one after another, lit by tall windows that frame views of the surrounding valleys. The parkland below slopes gently toward the rivers, where the contrast between the 18th-century architecture and the older stonework can still be traced. The whole place feels like a small but complete chapter of Swabian history, quietly organised and carefully preserved.
