Freihof Kirchheim

The Freihof Kirchheim is a protected historic half-timbered house in Kirchheim unter Teck, a town in the Esslingen district of Baden-Württemberg. Its oldest parts date from the Middle Ages, and it has served as an aristocratic seat, cavalry barracks, wool market and alchemists’ studio. Today it houses educational institutions and a music school. The building’s cross-shaped plan and three storeys reflect its 15th-century origins. The ground floor is solid stone, while the upper floors are mainly timber-framed. Inside, early Baroque stucco ceilings survive, along with round-arched doorways and heraldic cartouches. Over the centuries it passed through the hands of the Reuß, Wernau, Speth and Degenfeld families, among others, before becoming a cavalry barracks in the 19th century. Visitors find a carefully preserved example of medieval and early modern architecture in the town centre. The stone ground floor contrasts with the timber upper storeys, and the interior retains its historic stucco work. The building’s varied past is visible in its fabric, from military fittings to wool-store conversions. Today it forms part of a modern school campus while still showing its centuries-old character.
