St Mark's Church, Dolphinholme

St Mark’s Church stands in the quiet village of Dolphinholme, Lancashire, built in the late 19th century to serve mill workers and their families. Its sandstone walls and green slate roof blend with the surrounding countryside, giving the building a solid, unassuming presence. The church replaced an earlier structure erected sixty years before, when local mills were expanding and more space was needed. Designed by the Lancaster architects Austin and Paley, it cost £3,300 and seated nearly five hundred people. Consecrated in January 1899, it has remained an active place of worship ever since. The church is recognised for its careful design and craftsmanship. The nave, aisle, porch and chancel form a clear plan, with a tower rising at the crossing. Buttresses support the tower, which ends in a plain parapet and a weathervane. Inside, octagonal piers carry a three-bay arcade, and the chancel holds a piscina with a trefoil head. The font cover dates from 1910, and the stained glass shows Saints Mark and Peter. Nikolaus Pevsner praised the church alongside two others by the same architects, calling them hard to match in England. Outside, the churchyard contains war graves of a soldier and an airman from the Second World War. The quiet space around the building allows visitors to walk and reflect. The pointed doorway under the porch gable and the varied windows along the walls add to the church’s quiet character. The two-manual organ, built in 1927, still serves the congregation. Together, these features make the church a place where history, craft and community come together.
