St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church in Lenham, Kent, stands on a gentle rise above the village green. Begun in the 12th century and enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries, it is built of local rag-stone and flint under plain-tiled roofs. The tower, added in the 15th century, rises in three stages with battlemented parapets and a stair turret on the north-east corner. Gargoyles line the string course above the belfry windows, and a large three-light window lights the west face above the main door. The nave and chancel still show their early flint walls, while the east end was rebuilt in 1867 with knapped flint and a tall quatrefoiled window. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and fine Perpendicular windows. The nave arcade mixes 14th-century bays with one 15th-century remodelling, and the roofs display scissor-braced, king-post and crown-post carpentry. Medieval fittings remain, including a 13th-century piscina, a 15th-century octagonal font and a 14th-century wall painting of St Michael weighing souls. Recent work added a glass entrance and ramps for access, while the churchyard holds Grade II listed monuments and an unused gravestone for actor Tom Baker. Inside, the nave’s south wall carries the striking soul-weighing mural, and the chapel contains stalls and mixed nave pews. The north aisle’s reticulated windows and the restored chancel window show the best of the Perpendicular style. Outside, the tower’s buttressed corners and stair turret frame views across the village and the surrounding countryside. The churchyard’s monuments to local families and its Grade II listed headstones add quiet layers of memory to the site.
