Bazar

The Bazar building stands in central Munich on the east side of Odeonsplatz, where the Hofgarten meets the newly laid Ludwigstraße. Leo von Klenze designed it between 1824 and 1826 for Simon Freiherr von Eichthal, turning the old riding school site into a two-storey classical arcade. The 175-metre façade faces the Hofgarten with reused arcades and ends in symmetrical north and south pavilions. Inside the pavilions, history is visible. The north pavilion once housed the Munich Art Society until 1866, and after war damage it became home to the Filmcasino cinema until 2011. The south pavilion has held Café Tambosi since 1775, the city’s oldest café, opened by Luigi Tambosi in 1810. Today the arcades shelter shops and cafés beneath Klenze’s clean classical lines. Visitors walk past the café’s long windows and through the central pavilion into the Hofgarten’s shade. The arcade’s rhythm of arches frames views of Odeonsplatz while keeping the garden’s quiet on the other side.
