Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus

The Catholic parish church of St Nicholas stands on the eastern slope of the Nikolaiberg in the village of Sankt Nikolai im Sausal, a market town in the Leibnitz district of Styria. It belongs to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and is linked to Admont Abbey. The church and its surrounding cemetery are protected monuments. The present building was largely remodelled between 1705 and 1710 under Abbot Marian Lendlmayr of Lendenfeld, following plans by master mason Bartlmä Ebner. The tower was completed in 1871 and the choir rebuilt in 1818. Inside, the nave has five bays with barrel vaulting, while the choir ends in a semi-circular apse. A Roman stone with a round relief is set into the east wall of the sacristy. The furnishings date mainly from the second half of the 19th century. The tower chapel houses a 1747 votive painting of the Virgin as protector of the village, restored in 1972. Two oval portraits of Saints Blasius and Sebastian were painted by Johann von Lederwasch in the early 1800s. The organ, cast in 1740, was also restored in 1972. The baroque parish house stands nearby under a hipped roof.
