Fensteralpe

The Fensteralpe stands in the Gleinalpe range northwest of Graz, reaching 1,642 metres. It is the highest point between the Eiblkogel and Hochalpe along the main ridge. The name sometimes covers the whole stretch from Polstersattel to Almwirtsattel. The Polsterkogel, 1,673 metres high, lies southwest but is treated as a separate summit. The Polstersattel at 1,505 metres marks the boundary to the higher Eiblkogel. To the north-east the Pöllakogel drops away toward the Übelbachtal valley and the Gleinalmtunnel portal. The summit carries a small improvised cross and is crossed by three long-distance trails. The E6, the Central Alpine Trail and the North-South Trail all pass over the top. One route comes from Übelbach in the south-east, another follows the ridge from the Almwirtsattel and Pöllakogel. The area also forms the district boundary between Leoben and Graz-Umgebung and the meeting point of four municipal borders. A former alpine club hut once stood south-east of the summit at 1,416 metres. Named after Carl Hermann, founder of the North-South Trail, it served as an emergency shelter until 2015. The building has since been removed. The open slopes and clear ridge offer wide views over the surrounding mountains and down to the Übelbachtal valley.
