Sgùrr nan Spainteach

Sgùrr nan Spainteach stands on the watershed between Loch Duich and Glen Affric in the northern Highlands. It is a subsidiary summit of Sgùrr na Ciste Duibhe, which itself reaches 1,027 metres. The mountain carries a small cairn on its top, marking the highest point of the ridge walk from Loch Duich to Cannich. Cartographers classify it as a Munro Top and also as a Murdo, two recognised Scottish hill lists. Teams from the Scottish Mountaineering Club and the Munro Society keep the height and prominence data up to date. The name means ‘Peak of the Spaniards’, a reminder of a skirmish in the 18th century when Spanish gold was lost nearby. The ridge is part of a longer chain that includes other Munros such as Sgùrr Fhuaran and Sgùrr na Càrnach. Walkers often combine it with the main summit for a full day on the hills. Its steep northern corries hold snow well into spring, adding to the challenge. From the summit there are long views west to the Cuillin of Skye and east across Affric’s forests. The path follows the narrow crest, with drops of several hundred metres on either side. On clear days the Fannichs and An Teallach appear in the distance. The cairn is small but unmistakable, a simple stone pile in a wild landscape.
