Erhardkirche

The Erhardkirche stands in Salzburg’s Nonntal district, a quiet corner of the UNESCO-listed old town. Built in 1689, this Italian-baroque church replaced a 15th-century chapel that had served the nearby hospital. The façade shows the city’s emblem above the door and is framed by two slender towers topped with dome-like helmets. A marble fountain in front, the Erhardibrunnen, once supplied water to the servants’ ward of the cathedral chapter. The steps leading up to the porch recall the floods that once threatened the valley. The church’s interior is rich in stucco by Francesco Brenno and his team, with garlands, shells and coats of arms circling the dome. Three apses bear the Latin words Humilitas, Vigilantia and Zelotes, marking the altars of St Borromäus, St Erhard and St Francis Xavier. The high altar shows the baptism of St Ottilie by St Erhard, painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr in 1692. Side altars carry scenes of plague saints and missionary labours, their gilded frames still bearing the arms of the canons who paid for them. A heart urn set into the wall beside the Borromäus altar marks the resting place of a cathedral provost. Visitors step into a space where every surface tells a story. The dome rises on pendentives crowded with statues of local saints, while the pulpit of 1724 gleams with gilded scrolls. Above the nave hangs the organ case, its blue and gold finish restored to its 17th-century colours. The instrument itself has been rebuilt several times, yet the original layout of the gallery remains, blocking the view into the dome when the inner gates are closed. Outside, the quiet square and the old fountain complete a scene little changed since the 17th century.
