Pfarrkirche Brandenberg

The parish church of Brandenberg stands in the village of Brandenberg in the Kufstein district of Tyrol. It is dedicated to Saint George and belongs to the Reith deanery in the Salzburg archdiocese. The building is protected as a historic monument and surrounded by a cemetery. The church’s history begins in 1266 when it was listed as a branch of Breitenbach parish, served by the canons of St Andrä in Freising. In 1693 it became a curacy and in 1891 a full parish. The core of the church is late Gothic, but between 1678 and 1680 Georg and Oswald Zwerger remodelled it in Baroque style. The interior still shows the hand of Josef Arnold the Elder, who painted the ceiling in 1853 with scenes of Saint George’s martyrdom and the descent of the Holy Spirit. The nave is four bays long, vaulted with barrel and lunettes, and lit by oval windows. Pilasters with acanthus capitals line the walls, and delicate stucco frames the openings. The west gallery, added in the late 18th century, rests on Ionic columns and has a forward-swelling railing. The high altar of 1788 shows Saint George’s battle with the dragon, flanked by statues of Saints Peter, Paul and Vincent. The organ, rebuilt in 2023–24, now plays as it did in 1896, its pipes and wind system restored to their original condition.
