Fulham Broadway tube station

Fulham Broadway station stands in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It serves the Wimbledon branch of the District line, linking Parsons Green to West Brompton. The station sits on Fulham Broadway, a main road known as the A304. It is best known as the closest stop to Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea Football Club. The line runs through a cutting that was once open air before the shopping centre was built above it. Just past the station the tracks reappear before reaching West Brompton. The station opened in 1880 as Walham Green. In 1905 a new entrance was added to handle crowds for the newly built stadium. The entrance building, designed by Harry W Ford, is now Grade II listed. The name changed to Fulham Broadway in 1952 after requests from local traders. The station was rebuilt in the early 2000s with step-free access and special staircases for match days. The original street-level building now houses a Wetherspoons pub, keeping its terracotta facade and historic signs. Visitors find a busy station with platforms serving the District line. The original footbridge remains in place above the tracks. The ticket hall sits inside the shopping centre, with buses stopping right outside. The station has been the site of notable events, including riots after the 2008 Champions League Final. Above ground, Fulham Broadway offers shops and cafes, while Stamford Bridge lies a short walk away.
