Stadtbad Quedlinburg

The Stadtbad Quedlinburg is a protected municipal indoor swimming pool in the Harz region of Sachsen-Anhalt. It stands beside the Mühlgraben, a branch of the river Bode, on GutsMuthsstraße in the eastern part of Quedlinburg. The building itself is listed in the local monument register as a bathing establishment. The pool opened in 1903 after difficult ground conditions were overcome. Its architects followed the city’s wish to echo the town’s traditional half-timbered style, giving the façade a gabled front of exposed beams. Inside, visitors find separate areas for tub, shower and steam baths alongside the main swimming hall. Water is cleaned by an ozone system, and the pool measures 9 by 18 metres with depths from 0.7 to 2.8 metres. A broad flight of steps leads up to the main entrance, where the decorative portal welcomes guests. The surrounding area includes the remains of the old mill island that once lay between the Mühlgraben and Freigraben. The eastern boundary wall of the baths follows the line of the filled-in Freigraben.
