Vale of Pewsey

The Vale of Pewsey is a broad, low-lying stretch in Wiltshire between the chalk uplands of Salisbury Plain to the south and the Marlborough Downs to the north. Its floor lies around 150 metres above sea level, while the surrounding downs rise to 200–300 metres. The vale runs roughly 30 kilometres from Devizes in the west to beyond Burbage in the east, where it narrows near the River Bourne. The Kennet and Avon Canal and the main railway from London to the south-west follow this natural corridor, passing through Bruce Tunnel. At its western end the vale opens towards the Bristol Channel, though its waters drain eastward via the Salisbury Avon. The vale holds traces of every major British period. Neolithic causewayed enclosures such as Knap Hill were studied early in the 20th century by archaeologists Benjamin and Maud Cunnington. Nearby, the Stanchester Hoard of Roman coins was unearthed by a schoolboy in 2000 and now resides in Devizes Museum. In 2005 two henge sites at Marden and Wilsford were identified, adding to the vale’s Neolithic record. The landscape also carries reminders of later centuries: Savernake Forest remains a royal hunting ground, while Wilton Windmill still turns beside the canal. Visitors find a quiet countryside of rolling fields, chalk tracks and scattered villages. Milk Hill and Tan Hill mark the highest points at nearly 300 metres, offering wide views across the vale. The Kennet and Avon Canal invites gentle walks past pumping stations and through Bruce Tunnel. At Avebury the great stone circle stands just south of the vale, and Silbury Hill rises nearby. Smaller places like Alton Barnes show seasonal crop circles, while Marlborough’s broad high street lies close by. The vale’s footpaths link these landmarks without the need for major roads, keeping the scene uncluttered.
