Wherry Lines

The Wherry Lines are railway branch lines in the East of England, linking Norwich with Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. They run through the Broads of Norfolk and Suffolk, passing 14 stations including the three termini. The lines were opened in stages during the 19th century, first from Norwich to Great Yarmouth in 1844, then from Reedham to Lowestoft in 1847, and finally the northern route via Acle in 1883. Passenger services are currently operated by Greater Anglia using bi-mode multiple units. The route was designated as a community rail service in 2007 to increase patronage and community involvement. The Wherry Lines are not electrified, so trains use bi-mode units with a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour. The line from Norwich to Lowestoft is double-tracked, while the branches to Great Yarmouth are single-tracked. Two stations, Berney Arms and Buckenham, are lightly served, with Berney Arms seeing only four weekday trains and Buckenham just two. Service frequencies increase during the summer months, and the signalling system was modernised in 2018–19. The line between Reedham and Great Yarmouth was closed for upgrades from 2018 and reopened in February 2020. At most stations, passengers find simple platforms with basic facilities. The route offers views of the Broads’ waterways and surrounding countryside. Trains serve local communities and connect key destinations like Norwich, Great Yarmouth, and Lowestoft. The service plays an important role in the region’s transport network, linking rural areas with larger towns. The bi-mode units provide flexibility, running on both electrified and non-electrified tracks. The Wherry Lines remain a practical way to explore the Broads and its historic waterways.
