Südbad
The Südbad stands in Bremen’s Neustadt quarter beside the Neustadtswallanlagen, a municipal indoor pool opened in 1970. Architects Carl Rotermund and Walter Sommer designed the building, giving it a bold square footprint and a striking roof shaped like an uneven shallow V supported by two steel pylons. Inside are two pools: a training pool and a 25-metre competition pool with one-metre and three-metre diving boards. A wellness area includes a log-cabin sauna and foot baths, while a roof terrace with a conservatory overlooks the site. The pool’s most eye-catching feature is the 72-metre giant flume installed after a 2003 refurbishment. Fachzeitschriften praised the unusual structure when it opened, and the building is now regarded as a landmark of the Neustadt. The competition pool meets official standards for races, and the training pool serves local schools. Visitors can alternate between laps and relaxation in the sauna before stepping out onto the terrace. Beyond the pools and sauna, the roof terrace offers views across the Neustadtswallanlagen. The conservatory lets swimmers warm up in winter sunshine. The whole complex sits next to the Hochschule Bremen, linking sport with study. Its clean lines and functional spaces make it a quiet place to swim or simply pause.
