Burgstall Hochberg

The Burgstall Hochberg stands on a steep-sided spur of land 725 metres above sea level, overlooking the Traun valley near Hochberg. It was a small medieval spur castle built in the high Middle Ages, now reduced to earthworks and ditches. The site is listed as a protected archaeological monument in the Bavarian heritage register. Historians recognise it as an example of a triangular hilltop fortification typical of the region’s high medieval period. Gotthard Kießling’s survey of Traunstein district castles includes a detailed description of the surviving ramparts and trenches. The layout once enclosed a modest inner ward defended by a surrounding ditch and bank. Visitors walk along grassy paths that follow the line of the old defences. The views stretch across the valley towards Traunstein and the surrounding hills. The quiet woodland setting contrasts with the site’s former military purpose. Only the earthworks remain, but they still outline the triangular shape of the vanished stronghold.
