Queen Mary University of London

Queen Mary University of London stands in Mile End, East London, on a large self-contained campus. It is one of the member institutions of the federal University of London and belongs to the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. The university has six campuses across East and Central London, including Whitechapel, Charterhouse Square and Lincoln’s Inn Fields. It organises its work into three faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The university also runs programmes at the University of London Institute in Paris. The university is a major centre for medical teaching and research and is part of UCLPartners, the world’s largest academic health science centre. Among its alumni and staff are nine Nobel laureates, including Ronald Ross who discovered the cause and cure for malaria. Davidson Nicol uncovered how insulin breaks down in the body, while Andrew Pollard led the team behind the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The university’s history includes England’s first medical school, opened in 1785 at The Royal London Hospital. The Mile End campus blends modern facilities with historic buildings such as the Octagon and the Queens’ Building. The Octagon, once part of the People’s Palace, now serves as a lecture hall and meeting space. The Queens’ Building houses arts and humanities departments in rooms once used by the technical schools of the People’s Palace. The campus sits beside a former burial ground and close to the Charterhouse Square medical campus. Students and visitors find a mix of teaching spaces, libraries and social areas across the six sites.
