Theater Regensburg

Theater Regensburg stands in the Upper Palatinate city of Regensburg. It is a municipal organisation that stages operas, musicals, ballets, plays and concerts across several venues. The main house, the Theater am Bismarckplatz, opened in 1852 after an 1849 fire destroyed the first theatre built in 1804. Emanuel Herigoyen designed both buildings. The theatre was modernised in 1898 and again in the 1990s.
The company is recognised for premieres of new works and for its regular repertoire. In 1913 it presented a cycle of one-act pieces by Georg Britting and Erwin Weill. Richard Billinger’s play Die Hexe von Passau premiered there in 1935. Michael Ende wrote the libretto for Der Lindwurm und der Schmetterling, first performed in 1981. Since 2022 Sebastian Ritschel has led the theatre, and Stefan Veselka became chief conductor in 2023.
Visitors find the grand Theater am Bismarckplatz for operas and operettas. The Velodrom hosts musicals, plays and orchestral concerts in a converted 1897 cycling hall. Smaller stages include the 138-seat Theater am Haidplatz for literary and modern theatre and the 88-seat Turmtheater for experimental works.
