Allardice Castle

Allardice Castle is a 16th-century manor house in Kincardineshire, Scotland. It stands about 1.5 kilometres north-west of Inverbervie, with the Bervie Water river flowing through its grounds on both sides. The castle is part of a chain of coastal fortifications, including Dunnottar Castle to the north, Fetteresso Castle, Cowie Castle and Muchalls Castle. Built in an L-plan, it is a category A listed building. The castle was the chief seat of the Barons of Allardice, an ancient family first recorded in a charter of 1197. The estate lies within the parish of Arbuthnott, south of the Viscount of Arbuthnott’s lands. The current L-shaped structure dates from 1542, though many changes have been made since then. The original design is no longer visible. The present owners bought the castle in the 1970s and carried out extensive restoration work. The river winds around the castle grounds, adding to the setting. The estate remains a private residence, with the river and surrounding landscape shaping its character.
