Burg Bielenstein

Burg Bielenstein stands on the Bürgstein hill near Offenburg in the Ortenaukreis of Baden-Württemberg. It was built on a site called Riedle, about 450 metres above sea level. The castle belonged to the Lords of Bilenstein and was destroyed between 1524 and 1525. Today nothing remains of the old structure. Historians believe it was a refuge castle, designed to offer protection in times of danger. The Lords of Bilenstein held the property for centuries before its final destruction. Archaeologists have found traces of its walls and ditches in the past. Visitors walk through quiet woodland to reach the hilltop site. The view over the Ortenau region stretches far into the distance. A small information board explains what once stood there. The peaceful surroundings contrast with the castle’s violent end.
