Zeppelindenkmal
The Zeppelindenkmal stands on the Rhine’s right bank at kilometre 480, south of the landing stage in Geinsheim, a village in the Trebur district of southern Hesse. It marks the spot where Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s airship LZ 4 made an emergency landing on 4 August 1908. The small memorial was built the following year, on 4 August 1909, and opened quietly by the Geinsheim community for those involved in the long-distance test flight. The structure is made of rough stones laid in mosaic fashion, with two thick pylons rising about three metres. Between them sits a two-and-a-half-metre wall that resembles a fortification, and in its centre a plain stone tablet gives only the reason for the monument. A stone bench faces the tablet, flanked by the pylons, and the whole site is planted like a small grove. No records survive of the designer or the craftsmen who shaped the stones. Visitors walk up the riverside path to find the quiet memorial set above the dike. The pylons and wall echo the buoys to which the airship was tied that evening, while the raw stonework recalls the patriotic style of the period. From the bench, the wide Rhine stretches northwards, and the opposite bank shows Nierstein’s vineyards. The scene is calm, with only the occasional barge passing, so the monument’s simple lines and the story of the emergency landing remain undisturbed.
