Spangenberg Castle

Schloss Spangenberg stands on the wooded Schloßberg hill above the small town of Spangenberg in North Hesse. The castle overlooks the Pfieffe valley to the east and south and the Essebach tributary to the west and north. It began as a medieval fortified castle built by the lords of Treffurt to guard the important trade route from Frankfurt to Leipzig. The castle controlled the newly founded settlement below, which was already called a town in 1261 and received its town rights in 1309. The original hilltop castle had a deep well, defensive walls and a surviving palas with residential quarters. Most outbuildings were half-timbered at first. The castle became a Hessian residence under Landgrave Henry the Iron and later a hunting lodge for several landgraves. Landgrave William the Wise strengthened the fortress and gave the schloss its present external appearance. The castle’s fortifications were repeatedly improved, including six demi-bastions and an imposing gateway with the state coat of arms. It also served as a dower house for landgravines and a secure place to store money and archives. Landgrave Louis the Peaceful reinforced the outer walls with six demi-bastions, and Landgrave Philip built a large battery tower and underground passages. Today the castle houses a hotel and restaurant, blending its historic role with modern hospitality. Visitors find the medieval palas, fortified walls and the deep castle well still intact. The outer fortifications include earth ramparts, casemates and the surviving battery tower. The former commandant’s quarters and a hall built by Landgrave William IV remain part of the complex. The hunting museum occupies a building on the rampart, recalling the castle’s hunting-lodge past. The surrounding wooded hill offers views over the Pfieffe valley and the town below.
