Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey stands in the small town of Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders, twelve kilometres north of the English border. Built in the 12th century, it was once a powerful Augustinian abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The abbey church grew in importance over the centuries, with its nave and choir completed in the 13th century. The abbot was invited to Scottish Parliaments, and the abbey owned lands as far south as Northumberland. Its history reflects the turbulent times of Scotland’s wars with England, from Edward I’s interference in 1296 to damage by the Earl of Hertford in 1544. The abbey’s architecture blends Norman and early English styles, with two reused Roman stones built into its walls. After the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the abbey became a parish kirk until safety concerns led to a new church being built in 1871. The Marquis of Lothian restored the ruins, and in 1917 they passed into state care. The abbey is now a scheduled monument managed by Historic Environment Scotland. It shares its place in history with notable figures buried there, including John Capellanus, Bishop of Glasgow, and Thomas Somerville, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Visitors today walk among the roofless nave and transept, still standing after centuries of conflict. The north transept, completed in the 14th century, remains intact, offering a glimpse of the abbey’s former grandeur. The site is part of the Borders Abbeys Way, a walking route that links four historic abbeys. The ruins stand in a quiet town where the abbey once shaped daily life, from its school founded by canons to its role in local worship. The surrounding landscape, once a borderland of shifting loyalties, now frames a place of reflection and history.
