Schloss Heiligenstedten

Schloss Heiligenstedten stands on a rectangular island where the River Stör loops gently. The present building began as a Renaissance manor in 1583, rebuilt after a storm surge in 1756 and enlarged in the late 18th century by Otto von Blome. In the 19th century its façades were refashioned in a near-Gothic style while the original floor plan remained. A landscaped park once stretched around the house, but most of it merged with the surrounding fields after dike works. The estate passed through the hands of the Krummendiek, Rantzau and Ahlefeldt families before Otto von Blome’s descendants owned it for more than two centuries. A twelve-metre obelisk raised in 1796 by Otto Blome I marks the southern end of the park, crowned by a worn dog relief whose meaning has faded. The Blome library, rich in chronicles and copper-plate travel works, was sold in 1927 after the state bought the estate. Today the main house survives as a private hotel shell, its former stables and orangery now housing restaurants and a riding centre. A gated drive leads from the village street past these outbuildings to the island frontage. The obelisk still stands beside the inner dike, a quiet witness to the estate’s layered past.
