Burg Mähringen
The Burg Mähringen was a medieval water castle near the village of Mähringen, now part of Kusterdingen in the Tübingen district. Built around 1290, it belonged to the Bondorfer family from Reutlingen, who held both the castle and surrounding rights. After 1450 the structure fell into ruin, leaving only traces of its moat visible today. The site lies in a flat riverside meadow, once ideal for a fortified water stronghold. Its remains sit just north of the village centre, close to the River Neckar’s floodplain. Historians recognise Burg Mähringen as an example of a small noble residence from the late 13th century. The Bondorfer line used it to control local trade routes and river crossings. Over time the wooden palisades and earthworks gave way to stone, yet by the mid-15th century the castle was already abandoned. Archaeologists have recorded the outline of the moat, offering clues to its original size and shape. Written records from the period list the Bondorfers as castellans, confirming the site’s brief importance. Visitors today find a quiet field with a low earth bank marking the moat’s curve. A footpath skirts the northern edge, giving a clear view of the shallow depression where the main building once stood. Nearby farm tracks lead past old willows that line the Neckar, adding a rustic frame to the scene. The area remains largely undisturbed, allowing walkers to imagine the castle’s former presence. A small information board explains the site’s history to those who pass by.
