Schloss Reisensburg stands on a hill above the Danube near Günzburg in Swabia. The site was first settled over four thousand years ago, with traces from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. A fortress existed here by the 6th century, linked to the Gothic geographer Athanarid. In the 10th century, Berthold of Reisensburg owned the castle before being exiled from Bavaria. The building became a castle in the 16th century and was later burned by Swedish troops in the Thirty Years’ War.

The castle’s history includes many owners, from medieval nobles to the Freiherren von Eyb in the 18th century. After a period of decline, it was bought by Maximilian von Riedheim in the 19th century. Political troubles led to its sale in 1920, and in 1966 the International Institute for Scientific Cooperation acquired it. Since then, the University of Ulm has run it as a conference centre for academic meetings.

Visitors find a grand building with a long history, set in a peaceful riverside landscape. The surroundings include the wide Danube valley and distant hills. Inside, modern seminar rooms sit alongside rooms with centuries-old features. The site hosts workshops and lectures, blending scholarly work with historic charm. Its position on the hill still gives sweeping views over the river and countryside.
