All Saints' Church, Freshwater
All Saints’ Church stands in the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. It is a medieval parish church, one of the oldest on the island, and its name appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The church belongs to the Church of England and sits in the Anglican Diocese of Portsmouth. Mark Whatson serves as its pastor. Close by is a primary school linked to the church. The church holds notable memorials to the Tennyson family. A marble memorial honours Alfred Tennyson, the 1st Baron Tennyson. His wife Emily, their son Hallam, and other relatives are buried in the churchyard. A separate memorial remembers Lionel Tennyson, who died of malaria in 1886. Inside, plaques recall members of the Crozier family, including Lady Mary Martin. Admiral Crozier lies near Lord Tennyson beneath a large table tomb. A lychgate with a roof was built in memory of the Croziers. The churchyard contains 20 Commonwealth war graves: 15 from the First World War, including an unidentified seaman, and five from the Second World War. A member of the Tennyson family is among those buried from the First World War. The organ, built in 1905 by Henry Speechley and Sons, adds musical tradition to the building.
