Johannstein castle ruins

The ruins of Johannstein Castle stand in the Sparbach valley, about eight kilometres west of Mödling in Lower Austria. The hilltop stronghold rises roughly 450 metres above sea level, surrounded by dense forest. First mentioned only as a ruin, its exact date of construction remains unknown. Since 1809 the Liechtenstein family has owned both the crumbling walls and the nearby Sparbach Animal Park. Between 1995 and 2000 experts stabilised and restored what remained of the masonry. Historians credit Franz Xaver Schweickhardt for the earliest detailed description in 1831. His topographical survey records the castle’s place among the region’s defences under the Wienerwald. Werner Hammerl later compiled a modern entry for the Austrian castles database, listing Johannstein among the surviving medieval sites. The ruins themselves tell of a once-towering keep now half-absorbed by woodland. Visitors reach the site through the Sparbach Animal Park, where paths wind past enclosures of native deer and wild boar. From the park gate a short climb brings walkers to the castle’s outer walls, still standing to first-floor height. Ivy clings to the grey stone, and the forest canopy frames views across the valley. Inside the courtyard, sections of vaulted cellars hint at the original three-storey layout. The air carries the scent of damp earth and pine needles, blending with the distant calls of the animal park’s inhabitants.
