Ar Men

Ar Men is a lighthouse on a small rock at the far end of the Chaussée de l’Île de Sein, off the coast of Brittany. The name means ‘the rock’ in Breton and it was built between 1867 and 1881 on the only visible part of a reef that disappears beneath the waves. The rock covers only about 105 square metres when the tide is low, making it one of the smallest foundations for any lighthouse. The Atlantic surrounds it completely at high tide, leaving no foothold for weeks at a time. Construction crews could land on the rock on only seven days in the first year and spent just eight hours drilling holes. The tower rises 33.5 metres above the sea, with a base seven metres wide. The difficulties of building and staffing Ar Men earned it the nickname ‘Hell of Hells’ among lighthouse keepers. Keepers worked 30-day shifts in constant danger, and evacuations were nearly impossible once winter storms began. Supplies and new crews arrived by boat using a two-way rope sling to lift people onto the rock. The lighthouse finally became automated and electrified in 1990, replacing the manual labour of generations. Its light flashes three times every twenty seconds, with a sound signal every minute to guide ships through the reefs. The tower was listed as a historic monument in 2017. Visitors can reach Ar Men only by helicopter or by boat when the sea is calm enough. The white tower stands stark against the grey Atlantic, a silent witness to the struggles of its builders. Its beam still sweeps across the shipping lanes, warning vessels away from the submerged reefs. The surrounding waters are treacherous, but the lighthouse remains a fixed point in an ever-changing sea. The rock itself offers no shelter or path, only the tower’s solid form and the relentless motion of the waves.
