Khatchkar

A khatchkar stands in a park in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. It is a carved memorial stone with traditional Armenian cross motifs. The monument was erected on 4 May 2005 to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The khatchkar was commissioned by the Fund for the Preservation of Armenian Cultural Heritage. Its designer is the Armenian artist Arsen Panosyan, a master of wood carving and khatchkar craft. Panosyan has created similar memorials in Bremen and other cities, preserving the memory of the victims. Visitors find the khatchkar in a quiet park setting. The stone is richly decorated with characteristic Armenian patterns. Its presence links the city’s green space to a wider story of cultural loss and remembrance.
