Schloss Wolkenstein

Schloss Wolkenstein stands on a rocky spur high above the Zschopau river in the Erzgebirge. The 13th-century fortress was built to guard a trade route into Bohemia and later became the seat of the Waldenburg family. After passing to the Wettin electors it was enlarged by Heinrich the Pious and transformed into a Renaissance hunting lodge by his son August. The castle’s long history is visible in its surviving parts. The 14th-century keep and kitchen block form the oldest core, while the 16th-century wings and gatehouse show its later role as a noble residence. After centuries as an administrative centre and even a prison, the site now houses a local museum and a registry office. Visitors walk through the medieval courtyard to the restored Fürstensaal in the south wing. The museum displays finds from the 12th to 15th centuries, and the ground floor hosts a small restaurant. From the terrace the view drops to the river loop below and the surrounding hills.
