Weißeck

The Weisseck stands 2,711 metres above sea level in the Radstadt Tauern range of Salzburg. Its summit marks the border between Muhr in the Hohe Tauern National Park and Zederhaus in the Upper Salzach Valley Nature Park. The peak is made of pale Wetterstein dolomite, giving it a distinctive light colour. In winter it draws ski tourers, while in summer climbers tackle its slopes. The name means ‘white corner’, taken from the mountain’s striking pale rock. The mountain is reached from two main bases. From Zederhaus the Riedingtal valley leads to the Rieding gap, then along the western ridge to the top. From the Mur valley the Stickler Hut at 1,752 metres provides the starting point for the normal route. Both routes are waymarked and require only modest scrambling. Local legends speak of the Weisseck Dog, a creature said to guard the peak. Mineral collectors have long visited the mountain for its fluorite finds. Paths wind through alpine pastures and steep gullies on the final ascent. The summit offers wide views across the Tauern summits and valleys below. In summer the route passes Königalm and Zauneralm in the Riedingtal. Winter tours start from Gspandlalm and climb through the Höllgraben gully. The mountain’s light rock stands out against darker ridges, making it easy to recognise from a distance.
