River Ver

The River Ver is a chalk stream in Hertfordshire that flows for 28 kilometres before joining the River Colne. Its source lies near Lynch Lodge on the west side of the A5 road, and it passes through several villages and towns including Markyate, Flamstead, Redbourn, St Albans and Park Street. The river has a long history tied to local industry and settlement, with evidence of Roman activity along its banks. In the 1930s, parts of the river were canalised to create lakes in Verulamium Park following archaeological work led by Sir Mortimer Wheeler and his wife Tessa. The river’s flow has been affected by water extraction, causing seasonal drying in its upper reaches. The Ver’s past includes watermills used for grinding corn, paper making and even diamond lapping, with eleven mills recorded along its course. Some, like Redbournbury Mill, have been restored and still produce flour, while others such as Kingsbury Watermill operate as museums. The river’s history is also marked by notable bridges, including one in St Michael’s Street in St Albans, believed to be Hertfordshire’s oldest extant bridge and dating back to at least the 13th century. Nearby, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub claims to be England’s oldest, moved in the early 1600s to sit beside the river. Today, visitors can follow the Ver’s path through quiet countryside and historic towns. The riverbanks feature remnants of watercress beds and poplar plantations linked to cricket bat manufacturing. The stretch between Redbourn and St Albans remains largely unspoilt, offering a glimpse of the river’s natural and industrial heritage. The landscape around Pre Mill and the Gorhambury Estate includes willow and poplar trees, adding to the area’s rural character. Walkers can explore paths along the river, passing sites that tell the story of its changing role over centuries.
